Frozen Banana Ice Cream (Ice Cream that’s good for you!)

Homemade Banana Ice Cream, the healthiest ice cream recipe ever!
Homemade Banana Ice Cream, the healthiest ice cream recipe ever!

If you haven’t yet heard of frozen banana ice cream, you are going to be so stoked.  This is a recipe that can change your life.  The only sugar is the natural sugar in the bananas.  It’s simply bananas and milk, that’s right, the healthiest ice cream recipe in the world! It can even be made without milk if you want vegan ice cream. When I was taking care of my brother last week, he would get “fun time” with me if he finished his chores and responsibilities with a good attitude.  I’d offer all sorts of things like seeing a movie, going to the park, playing a sport, but he always chose to cook or bake with me in the kitchen.

We made all sorts of treats like pie, pumpkin bars and this ice cream.  He was astonished that we could make ice cream without the ice cream maker and without heavy cream.  We have to watch Jason’s diet very carefully.  I guess because of his autism, he really lacks impulse control.  So when he’s hungry, he will often eat a carton of ice cream rather than an apple or sandwich.

Our first day with him I went to the grocery store and Eric was downstairs doing some freelance work on the computer.  The house got really quiet and Eric felt like he should go check on Jason.  As he looked into the kitchen, Jason threw something in the garbage can.  Eric looked inside and saw an empty ice cream container covered in cocoa powder.  Jason confessed to eating a half full carton of ice cream with a cup of cocoa powder dumped into it.  By the time I got back from the store, he was in a full on sugar crash and feeling terribly sick.

Amazing that just bananas and milk make such a frosty treat!

No matter how many times he’s done this, he doesn’t learn.  But this ice cream is one that Jason can eat a whole container of because, like I said, it’s a healthy ice cream recipe.  So if you have an ice cream piggie in your family, or if you love ice cream like I do, make your own ice cream from fresh fruit.  Have fun!

Frozen Banana Ice Cream

makes 8-10 scoops

Ingredients

3 bananas peeled
1/4 – 1/2 milk

Instructions

Slice bananas into chunks and freeze overnight.  Place banana chunks into a food processor and begin to process.  Add 1/4 cup of milk and continue processing.  You can add more milk if needed for the texture.

I like to eat immediately while it’s a soft serve consistancy, but for scoops like in my picture above, place in a sealed container and freeze for 30 minutes to an hour.

Approximate cost/serving: Bananas are cheap, and milk is cheaper than cream, so this is even more affordable than regular ice cream.  It came out to only 8 cents a scoop!

Vegetarian/Gluten Free: Yes and Yes!  For vegan, just skip the milk.

  1. Lucky brother to have a sister like you! The fiber from the bananas must help make the mouthfeel creamier. Yum. He’s pretty brilliant to mix in cocoa.

  2. I made this banana ice cream for the first time earlier this week and it turned out great. Today, I decided to try to make this recipe vegan by using coconut milk instead of regular milk (I’m not vegan, but love coconut milk ice cream!). It was really good. I even added mango puree that I already had and unsweetened coconut that I toasted and it turned out to be an amazing healthy tropical treat!
