I use a lot of taco seasoning. I mean A LOT! Not only do I use it regularly for my own family, but I also make taco soup 2-4 times a month for festivals, classes or friends. I used to buy premixed taco seasoning in a big jar at Sam’s Club; but when they switched to a brand that wasn’t gluten free, I decided it was finally time to make my own. Although no one in my home is gluten intolerant (that we know of), I prefer to use gluten free ingredients whenever possible for the events that I provide samples for.
Buying the packets of taco seasoning NEVER makes financial sense because they’re SO overpriced. But when I recently did the math I found out that buying the spices for making taco seasoning in bulk comes out to a little less than buying the bulk taco seasoning…one more way to save a little!
The two ingredients that I always want in my taco seasoning are cumin and paprika, it just doesn’t taste right without them! Of course you also need some garlic and onion powder and some peppers for heat. After tweaking my portions a few times, this is now my go to recipe for homemade taco seasoning.
We like ours very spicy, so I use 1/4 cup of seasoning for a pound of ground beef or turkey. If you don’t want it too spicy just use 1/8 of a cup. I know packet seasoning directions say to use water when making your taco meat, but I just stir the spices into the ground beef about half way through the cooking time.
I’m curious, do you use store bought taco seasoning, homemade taco seasoning, or season everything as you go?

I don’t use taco seasoning at all. I juse salsa to season the meat or tomatoes with chilies or mexican seasonings that have been pureed in the blender. I like my meat really moist and then I don’t have to add tomatoes! My mother-in-law use to use BBQ sauce. That is how she did it for her family as they were growing up! I am going to make some of this for my Sis-in-law as part of their Christmas basket though because she needs gluten free stuff. Thank you!!!
Thanks for sharing! I’ve been looking for this!
I’m making tacos with the family tonight and my husband is celiac, thanks for posting this.
You’re so welcome Amy!
