When it comes to edible gift giving, I think that vanilla sugar is the most popular of the flavored sugars.  In my post about flavored sugar I talk about how I started making it as a way to use empty vanilla bean pods.  While it’s a great way to make vanilla beans more cost efficient, you can also use all the little beans inside the pod which I explain in the recipe.  I use clean, dry fingers to break up the beans in the sugar.  But if you’ve used the tiny vanilla beans for something else, feel free to just stick the pod in the sugar.

Vanilla Orange Shortbread Cookie Recipe

I’ve been on a baking kick lately, which is rather surprising since I consider myself a cook, not a baker.  But I’ve had the flavors of vanilla and orange kicking around in the back of my mind for weeks, and decided that the best way to play with that was to start with the simple buttery goodness of shortbread cookies.  Eric said these were “kinda dainty” (which led to him making his own oatmeal cranberry cookies!), but I thought that made them perfect to pair with tea or coffee!

Berries and Cream (the simplest summer dessert)

I’m still on vacation, and recovering from both vacation and our pa’ina on Saturday.  Our apartment is so messy with suitcases, boxes of condiments and seasonings, laundry and bags of dishes all over the place to be unpacked and put away.  Eric and I started the cleaning today, but our apartment is about 87 degrees (with an air conditioner) which is still 10 degrees cooler than outside so we can’t complain too much.  Poor Eric was pouring sweat trying to wash dishes with hot water.  So finally we decided we’d made a good dent and would go to his parents’ house (which is about 75 degrees) to do some laundry and pick berries.  His mom has raspberry and blueberry bushes at the side of the house.
