Cooking with kids is a great way to build confidence, get relational time, and teach of love of healthy foods. This Daniel Tiger tangerine snack also helps teach the letter T, a great way to make reading fun! See the post above for step by step photos on how your mini chef can make this snack, or make it yourself as a sweet surprise.

Author: Diana Johnson
Ingredients
  • 2 tangerines
  • 3 strawberries
  • 1/4 teaspoon sour cream
  • 2 mini chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
  1. Peel both tangerines, but only pull one into segments, leaving the other whole.
  2. Cut the very tip off of one strawberry, and place it point side down into the center of the whole tangerine.
  3. Slice the tips off of two segments from the other tangerine.
  4. Break a couple toothpicks in half, and poke them into the whole tangerine, two on each side of the head, for the ears.
  5. Press two segment tips onto the toothpicks on one side, cut side together. Repeat on the other side.
  6. Dab two ovals of sour cream above the nose for the whites of the eyes, then place the mini chocolate chips at the bottom of each oval, point side down.
  7. Place the 1/2 cup of chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Stir with a fork until completely melted (you can continue microwaving in 10 second intervals if you need to).
  8. Scoop the melted chocolate into a zip top bag, then cut the very tip off one bottom corner to make a small hole.
  9. Squeeze the chocolate out through the hole, piping it around the eyes, eyebrows, the inner ears, the smile, and his stripes (use the photo as a guide).
  10. Let the chocolate sit for about 5 minutes to harden, you may need to stick it in the fridge for a couple minutes if it's a hot day.
  11. Slice the remaining two strawberries and cut a capital and lower case T out of the slices.
Recipe Notes

Approximate cost/serving: We buy a big bag of tangerines for around $6, and also get chocolate chips in bulk. This cost us around 45 cents.
Vegetarian/gluten free: This is naturally gluten free and vegetarian, you can also make it vegan by using dairy free dark chocolate chips.
