Picky Eaters Prize Pack Giveaway

Here’s the awesome picky eaters prize pack I promised in the baked chicken nuggets post.  This giveaway is courtesy of the Hellmann’s Chicken Change Up.  I haven’t tried the cookbooks, but I seriously want all the fun gadgets!  We used to cut our sandwiches into shapes as a kid and it was a great way to get us to eat more.  We also loved our kid chopsticks, and though we didn’t have bento boxes, I personally want to use those now as an adult!  This giveaway is open until April 27, 2012.

    Often times the kids I watch don’t want to stop, sit down at eat. So we’ll play a game where the kids can run around the room then grab a bite.

    We serve everything to our daughter but don’t pressure her to finish everything on her plate. She very often takes a bite of all the dishes and only finishes the ones she likes. I encourage this behavior because it builds life-long polite eating and dining habits and makes mealtimes bearable.

    I make green smoothies every day and serve them at the beginning of lunch–I pack them with all kinds of fresh organic greens and also add berries to make it purple. Plus bananas to cut the bitterness of some greens like chard. I add in all sorts of fruits and veggies and the kids slurp them up!

    I always tell me kids kids try it once if u dont like it you never have to eat again. usually they like it and are excited.

    I serve what is there. If they don’t like it I will encourage them to try. If they don’t try it I won’t give them anything else until an hour later or if they totally fussy until next meal. They have learned to eat what is served…for the most part.

    I used to live with a girl who refused to eat vegetables so when I cooked for the whole house I would hide them in the meal’s main dish. My favorite and easiest method is chop up mushrooms very fine then throw them in while browning ground beef/turkey for chili or spaghetti. Not only does this help flavor the meat it makes the veggies practically invisible.

    I try to present new dishes and new flavors for the kids. Plus, repeated offerings, so they get used to things over time. Sometimes it works. A good sauce always helps.

    Aloha! I make sure that the kids eat what I eat. If they see me enjoying a variety of foods then they tend to be open to trying new things. In fact, my kids eat things that I don’t eat because they tried it and found out that it suits their taste buds for example: poi and poke(raw fish chunks with seaweed and other seasonings). My number one rule is never make something separate just for them. I believe that is how picky eaters are created.

    A little at a time. Our family rule is “try at least one bite”. Eventually, familiarity seems to do the trick and foods that didn’t seem so good at first become familiar and more tasty. (Incidentally, my husband has the same philosophy about music/literature/art appreciation, too–keep a person exposed to little bits of a song or type of literature until it becomes familiar, and eventually it also becomes appealing, the more “known” it is.)

    I find small portions help encourage just trying something new and once they “like” something giving an additional portion.
